Notch apps for AI coding agents, compared

Eleven Mac apps that put Claude Code, Codex and other coding agents in the notch, paid and free, in one table. Several of the free ones are very good, and if you would rather not pay, start with CodeIsland or Open Island. CrewTower is the paid one built around a single moment: the agent that has stopped and is waiting for you, answered without going to the terminal.

Every other app's row is from its own site or repository, checked on 19 October 2026. Where a site says nothing, the cell says so rather than guessing. Sources.

Reading the table

  • Prices are for one Mac. CrewTower's $9.99 is an early bird price and includes every later update; Vibe Island's and AgentNotch's include one year of updates. Pushary Isle is a subscription to a hosted service, and Agent HUD's Mac app is free with a paid phone remote.
  • Agents are counted the way each product counts them. Thirty supported, twenty-six recognised and nine named are not the same claim, and what each app can do differs from agent to agent, in CrewTower as in the others.
  • “Answer from the notch” is about permission prompts. It always depends on the agent: CrewTower answers for six and shows the rest with Jump, and the others list their own.
  • Usage window means the provider's quota left, such as Claude's 5-hour and weekly windows. Tokens and cost means a history of what was spent. For apps that only meter usage, see the usage monitors compared.

Where CrewTower loses

It is not free. CodeIsland and Open Island are free and open source, cover more agents than CrewTower answers for, answer permission prompts and jump to the exact tab. If you would rather not pay, start there.

It needs macOS 15. Vibe Island, AgentPeek, Agent HUD, Pushary Isle, CodeIsland and Open Island run on macOS 14.

There is no free trial of the Mac app. CrewTower has an interactive demo on its website; Vibe Island, AgentNotch, AgentPeek and Pushary Isle let you try the app itself for a few days.

It keeps no token or cost history. Vibe Island, AgentPeek, Agent HUD and Notchi report tokens and cost, and AgentNotch keeps a token history. The most CrewTower shows is what the current Claude Code session has cost so far, with the beta Tell Claude plugin on.

Fewer agents. Vibe Island supports thirty and CodeIsland thirty or more; CrewTower answers for six of the twenty-six it recognises.

Nothing on your phone, nothing over SSH. coucou, CodeIsland, Agent HUD and Pushary Isle reach a phone, and Vibe Island and CodeIsland follow agents on remote hosts. CrewTower watches the Mac it runs on.

Where CrewTower is different

Updates that do not run out, at $9.99. One payment, every later update included, no account and no subscription.

No keystroke path, anywhere. An agent's hook blocks on a local Unix socket while it waits, and CrewTower answers over that same socket, so the prompt resolves in place without the terminal coming forward. Where an agent offers no decision channel, the answer is Jump.

It alerts when the ChatGPT app itself is waiting for you. No hook fires when ChatGPT asks you something on its own, such as Plan mode's “Implement plan?” or a setup step, so CrewTower follows ChatGPT's state for the Codex tasks on the notch and announces those asks like any other.

It tells you, then stops asking. A waiting session opens the notch briefly, nudges again at one, five and fifteen minutes, then goes quiet; a Focus mode silences it while the badge still shows who is waiting.

The provider's own usage figure. For Claude Code the window comes from Anthropic's own usage endpoint, and for Codex from Codex's own rate limit reporting, not an estimate from local files.

Questions

Does it also work if I have several Claude sessions running at once?

Yes. Every running Claude Code session gets its own card, in terminals and in the Claude app, and the ones waiting on you sort to the front. One card can also hold several requests at once, from the session and its subagents, each answered on its own.

On the card I only see “working”. Can I see what it is doing right now, like the last tool call or a progress line?

Yes. Press Activity on the card: it opens the last stretch of that session's transcript inside the card, what the agent said and what it ran, in order, newest at the bottom. For the agents CrewTower follows live, the line under the title also names the current step, and running subagents are listed beneath it.

Is it on Windows or Linux?

No. CrewTower is a Mac app and needs macOS 15 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Of the apps in the table, coucou is the one that publishes Windows and Linux builds.
